History

In 1912, with no parish of their own, the 45 Catholic families in the Park Hill neighborhood were being served by a parish outside the area. Directed by the bishop to do so, Fr. Frederick McDonough purchased six lots on the corner of Montview Boulevard and Elm Street. Two adjoining lots were donated and Blessed Sacrament Parish was formed. The original building was built in 1913 to serve as chapel, rectory and parish hall.

In 1922, Blessed Sacrament Parish announced the partial conversion of the parish building to accommodate students. Known today as “the old school”, the original building houses the K-3rd grade classrooms and the library. The Sisters of Loretto accepted charge of the school, and in the fall of 1922, 57 pupils were enrolled and a vital and challenging educational institution was born.

A second building was constructed in 1951 to address the growing needs of the area, as well as serve as a high school facility for the Park Hill area until a larger high school building could be built 8 years later. Dubbed Bishop Machebeuf High School, the building included a gymnasium, cafeteria, kitchen, classrooms and offices. Today, that building houses Harvey Gymnasium, 4th and 5th grades, the art classroom, computer lab, Literacy Specialist’s center, an admin office, the kitchen and cafeteria.

In 2000, Machebeuf High School moved to the Lowry area. The large building that the high school previously occupied was perfect for the Middle School students of Blessed Sacrament Catholic School. The unused space was converted to a preschool in 2005. The building today houses the Middle School, Preschool, administrative offices, Used Uniform Store, as well as the Dance Conservatory and Religious Educaiton meeting rooms – allowing for continued growth of BSCS in the future.

Since the first graduating class in 1930, much has changed and much has stayed the same. Blessed Sacrament Catholic School now enrolls more than 375 students from 2 1/2 year old preschoolers to 8th graders preparing to enter high school. During more than 90 years of its existence, Blessed Sacrament Catholic School has stayed true to its values of faith, academics and service. The legacy started by the Sisters of Loretto in 1922 continues today as students are prepared to act as responsible, self-respecting, well-educated citizens.
